ISLE of Wight yachtsman Kit Hobday is putting the wind into the sails of local charities by staging a glamorous fundraising opera event.

Mr Hobday, owner of the internationally-acclaimed racing yacht Bear of Britain, will be staging the Midsummer Opera at the Island's luxurious Priory Bay Hotel to raise funds for people undergoing chemotherapy at St Mary's Hospital, in Newport. The glittering black tie evening is being staged on June 20 and 21, with cash raised going to the Kit Hobday St Mary's Chemotherapy Appeal.

The charity was launched after Mr Hobday suffered from prostate cancer and realised that the facilities at the hospital were in desperate need of improvement.

Funds will also go towards the Lucie Blackman Trust, which aims to educate women and young people about the use of new technological devices they can use for their own safety. The trust was founded by Ryde businessman Tim Blackman whose daughter was murdered in Japan in 2000.
