A 20-strong team from HMS Collingwood pulled a cannon three quarters of a mile from the base's gates in Newgate Lane to the centre of Fareham.

The field gunners even managed to pull the gun -- weighing the equivalent of a family saloon car -- so fast that their welcome party had not yet arrived.

The team took on the stint to raise awareness of the HMS Collingwood Maritime Showcase being held next month and to raise cash for the Fareham based, Rainbow Centre, for children with cerebral palsy.

Warrant officer, Don Shaw, said: "Pulling the gun was quite an easy task for our crew and we are hoping to do well in the Navy Field Gun Competition at the showcase. There will be 18 teams from across the country taking part and we are expecting up to 8,000 people to visit the base on June 10."

The HMS Collingwood Maritime Showcase starts at 11am on Saturday, June 10. Tickets can be bought in advance from the Gosport and Fareham Tourist Information office in West Street, Fareham.
