TENS of thousands of music fans will be arriving for the Hi:Fi South festival -- formally known at Homelands -- at Cheesefoot Head near Winchester this weekend.

The three-day event, on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, is expected to attract more than 40,000 visitors each day.

Among the bill-toppers are Hard-Fi, Ian Brown and the Super Furry Animals.

Winchester City Council officers will be on hand to check the facilities provided on site -- for a temporary population equivalent in size to a small town-- including noise, water supply, sanitary accommodation, health and safety, catering and clearance of litter, both during and after the event.

Cllr Frank Pearson, portfolio holder for environment, health and safety, at the city council, said: "We always get excellent co-operation from the organisers which makes the job of the police and ourselves easier.

"Although there is a cost to the city council ensuring environmental health officers are on site for the whole event, overall the city benefits greatly.

"We want everyone to be able to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and without disruption."

The city council has set up some helplines for people with any concerns about the festival. For noise nuisance, call 01962 840 899; for police, call 0845 0454 545 (dial 999 in an emergency); for all other issues call 01962 865 407.
