COUNCIL chiefs have unveiled plans to make part of Hythe more pedestrian friendly.

The scheme, expected to cost up to £200,000, involves major alterations to the car park between St John's Street and New Road.

Some of the biggest changes will take place outside The Grove, headquarters of Hythe and Dibden Parish Council.

The area between The Grove and the car park will be turned into a village square-style facility by raising the level of the road and making it the same height as the adjoining pavement.

Motorists will still be allowed through, including those heading for the nearby Waitrose supermarket.

However, the St John's Street entrance to the car park will be closed to all vehicles except lorries owned by stallholders involved in the Tuesday market.

All other drivers will have to enter and exit the car park via New Road.

The scheme aims to improve the appearance of the area as well as reducing traffic flows in St John's Street and the southern section of South Street.

Other proposals include improvements to the footway between St John's Street and the High Street.

The scheme will be funded by Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council and developers. Work is due to start in September.
