After his victory in the previous weekend's Cycle Kingdom Classic, Winchester's Rob Hurd made it two out of two in the midweek Goodwood Gallops Circuit race.

The famous Goodwood Motor racing circuit suits Hurd's aggressive style and he sprinted to victory over Russell Page - father of Isle of Wight star Kieran - of SP Systems-Wightlink.

Another Islander, Simon Saunders, was fifth, to complete his preparation for this week's seven-day Irish Milk Race, where he is riding for a combined Surrey League team.

Racing against some strong professional teams, including the TIAA-CREFF from the USA, Saunders sits in 30th place overall after stage two of Ireland's top race.

Sunday's torrential rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of the riders as the southern road race championships took place at Owslebury, near Winchester.

Extreme weather always bring out the grittiest competitors and it was once again Hurd was to the fore, finishing third.

As the riders took to the Mountbatten centre track for the first of the Portsmouth circuit races, it was Tim Costello who attacked from the off.

I-team rider Tom Butt joined him in lapping the field, and Butt proceeded to win.

Graham Harman of Sotonia CC continued his dominance of his club's time trials by taking the latest edition with a time of 23min 22sec.

Harman's win was all the more impressive in that second placed riders Stuart Martingale and Julian Gee were riding a tandem and finished almost 30 seconds behind.

Junior Daniel Leavesley has showed steady progress in his first season of time trialling and has been getting close to going inside 30 minutes for the ten miles.

He set a new pb over a minute this week, finishing in 29min 3sec.
