A HAMPSHIRE soldier is not only on target with a modern rifle, but also with the ancient bow.

Lance Corporal Lee Miller, from Southampton, has proved his talent when shooting with the Army archery team in national competitions - and has been awarded a £500 grant from the Army sports lottery fund to help him on his way as he trains for competitions.

The historic bow and arrow, made famous by the likes of folk hero Robin Hood, bears little physical resemblance to its 21st century counterpart, although the principles and skills remain the same.

Lee, 24, who joined the Army in 1998 and is currently serving with the Royal Military Police, said: "I started archery as a hobby back in 1992. I loved the sport and have kept it up ever since.

"Now I'm in the Army I get loads of help and support for it."

The former Applemore College pupil said: "My ambition now is to continue representing the Army and to get a place on the national team and maybe shoot in the Olympics."

For the past 80 years archery has been a competitive sport in the service administered by the Army Archery Association.
