Local club cricket is bracing itself for a second consecutive week of mass postponements after heavy rain waterlogged grounds across the region.

Both the Southern Electric Premier and Hampshire Leagues expect the bulk of tomorrow's matches to be called off.

It will be the third time in the opening month of the season the programme has been hit by the wet weather.

"We had a full programme on May 13, but that's it," sighed Premier League chairman Paddy Heffernan, who is struggling to recall a wetter opening to the season.

"Ironically, the Premier League put its start date back a week so we could play on into early September. Predictably enough, all the clubs enjoyed a fine, dry day for their pre-season friendly matches on April 29, but it's hardly stopped raining since."

So far this season, the SPL has lost 28 of its scheduled 57 games.

But the Hampshire League, the country's largest recreational weekend competition, has had a staggering 230 matches washed out in three weeks.

The wet weather has also put a question mark over Sunday's ECB Cockspur Cup third-round ties at Bournemouth, Havant and Ventnor.

The county quarter-final ties in the npower Village Cup were all rained off last weekend and, if the grounds don't dry out this Sunday, clubs like Burridge, Easton & Martyr Worthy and Paultons will have their games decided by the toss of a coin.

The Premier League is scheduled to have a 50-over representative match against the Isle of Wight Cricket Board at Bashley on Monday.

Sunday's fixtures:

ECB Cockspur Cup, third round: Bournemouth v Portsmouth (Chapel Gate), Havant v Basingstoke & North Hants (Havant Park), Ventnor v Reading (Steephill, 12.30).

Npower Village Cup, third round: Bramshaw v Burridge, Longparish v Eversley, Michelmersh & Timsbury v Easton & Martyr Worthy, Paultons v Sparsholt, Rowledge v Frensham.
