Promising Hampshire batsman Kevin Latouf will be out of action for at least six weeks after tearing the medial ligament in his right knee at a midweek Rose Bowl training session.

Latouf, 20, who played in last September's C & G Trophy triumph at Lord's, is now hobbling about with a brace on his knee and does not expect to play again until July.

"We were having an innocent game of football on the outfield - something we normally do in training - when I suffered the injury," Latouf explained.

"It's a shade early yet to know the extent of the injury, but I'm naturally gutted it's happened - particularly as I felt in good such form."

Latouf's season had been restricted to a handful of county Second XI matches and two superb knocks for Hampshire's Academy side in the Southern Electric Premier League.

The former England Under-19 opener hit an elegant 97 in the Young Hawks' rain-hit opener against Bashley (Rydal) and followed it up with a match-winning 122 not out against South Wilts two weeks ago.

Latouf does have one crumb of comfort - he's almost certain to win the season's first Southern Electric Cricketer-of-the-Month award.

The Bishop's Waltham youngster will be on the sidelines for the Academy's scheduled SPL visit to Havant - the only Premier League match that looks to have any chance of going ahead.

"We've managed to play all three of our SPL matches at Havant Park so far, but the wet weather of the past few days is really going to test us this time," said Havant team manager Mark Readman.

Havant, who won their opening game at newly-promoted Alton but then lost to BAT Sports, give an SPL debut to former Minor Counties representative opener Steve Dean, a prolific batsman in his Walsall and Shropshire days, who is free from maths teaching duties at Portsmouth Grammar School.

And Andy Perry, who led Havant to the Cockspur Cup semi-finals last season, is due to play after undergoing shoulder surgery this winter.

"I'm not 100 per cent. My shoulder seems ok, but the back is sore, so I'll just have to take it easy," said Perry, who replaces the ailing Sam Walker (laryngitis).

Havant expect to be up against their own England Under-16 left-arm spinner Chris Morgan, who plays Premier League cricket for the Academy.

Morgan will be back in Havant's colours for Sunday's scheduled Cockspur Cup clash against Basingstoke & North Hants.

Bournemouth acknowledge there's little prospect of their home match with champions BAT Sports going ahead either.

Hampshire's Greg Lamb is named by BAT, who won their opening two games against Liphook & Ripsley and Havant.

A broken thumb continues to keep skipper Rob Wade out of the South Wilts team at Ventnor, but Alton's Michael Heffernan is eyeing a return to SPL action after breaking his leg in a soccer accident earlier this year.

Heffernan misses the trip to Portsmouth, but could be back for next week's trip to South Wilts, having come through a 2nd XI game at Ellingham last weekend without any problem.
