THEY have adorned the walls of the building for decades, alerting passing drivers in the New Forest to the food on sale.

However, when Barbara Steward turned the former cafe and corner store in Bartley into an ice cream parlour some 18 months ago, she had no idea one of her billboard signs would spark a row with planners.

The New Forest National Park authority, which took over as the planning authority on April 1, has branded one of the signs an "unauthorised advertisement".

It points to a farm down the road that also sells Mrs Steward's home made dairy ice cream at horse jumping shows at least once a week through the season, from April to September.

Mrs Steward, 42, is also furious that an enforcement officer who took offence to her signs interviewed her 18-year-old South African sales assistant, leaving him feeling "upset and intimidated".

The New Forest National Park Authority has given her 28 days to remove the offending advertisement.
