MORE than 1,000 runners braved the bad weather in Winchester to do their bit for a charity dedicated to improving people's breathing.

The participants were taking part in the annual Race For Hope, to raise funds for the Wessex Medical Research's Hope charity.

The charity raises money for research into asthma, to find cures for the disease and to work out what exactly causes it and what can be done to prevent other people succumbing to it.

Much of the research funded by the charity is conducted by the Hampshire Asthma and Allergy Clinic at Southampton General Hospital, under the leadership of world expert Professor Stephen Holgate.

It is the fifth race the charity has now organised in Winchester, with the runners setting off on Sunday morning for the 10km race from the city's River Park Leisure Centre.

A spokesman for the organisers said they hoped the race would raise them several thousand pounds.
