INVESTIGATIONS were continuing into a suspected arson attack at a popular Hampshire hostelry.

The Old Ship in Lower Swanwick was devastated by fire when a rubbish bin outside the pub caught alight and flames spread to the adjoining building.

The public bar area, which was empty at the time of the blaze, was destroyed by the fire and 75 per cent of the pub's roof was destroyed.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue are continuing to work alongside police to determine whether the fire was started accidentally or deliberately.

"It's still too early to be sure and investigations are continuing at the moment between us and Hampshire police," said a spokesman for the fire service.

About 40 firefighters from stations across Hampshire attended the blaze, which quickly spread through the pub, which has been a popular watering hole for drinkers along the River Hamble since the 16th century.

Staff at the pub in Bridge Road the main A27 route that leads through neighbouring Bursledon were alerted to the fire at around 4.20pm on Saturday by a customer who spotted flames shooting out of the bin as he left the building.

If anyone saw anything suspicious outside the pub before the fire, you can contact Hampshire police on 0845 045 4545.
