WORK is under way on a £500,000 state-of-the-art youth centre for youngsters in Fair Oak and Bishopstoke. It is planned to have the building, at Brookfield public open space, ready by the autumn.

The scheme includes social areas, meeting rooms and a multi-use youth hall. This will provide space for larger events and activities along with a fully equipped kitchen.

It will be managed by a partnership forged between Bishopstoke, Fair Oak and Horton Heath Local Area Committee, Bishopstoke Parish Council, Fair Oak and Horton Heath Parish Council and Hampshire Youth Service.

Professional youth workers will staff the building.

Speaking on behalf of the youth partnership, Councillor Philip Spearey said: "We are delighted that after many years of hard work this exciting project is now underway."

Councillor Spearey cut the first turf to start work on the new youth facility watched by Eastleigh Council's Kevin Kirk, Helen Douglas, chairman of the Fair Oak & Horton Heath Parish Council, area co-ordinator Min Partner, Steve Willis, of the Hampshire Youth Service and Councillor Anne Winstanley of Bishopstoke Parish Council.
