A MOTORIST lost control of his car at a controversial double set of roundabouts, ploughing into a house in an early morning accident.

The accident happened in Hunts Pond Road in Titchfield Common as the driver tried to navigate the double set of roundabouts at the junction with Church Road.

It is thought he lost control and ended up driving up a driveway and into the porch of one of the houses.

The roundabouts were installed a couple of years ago at the busy junction, to the dismay of some local residents who felt they were poorly positioned.

Today some of the residents said the roundabouts were an "accident waiting to happen".

Peter Barnes, 74, who lives off Hunts Pond Road, said: "This is a long straight road and people often come down here at a tremendous speed. Unless you know about the roundabouts they are extremely dangerous, we've just been waiting for an accident to happen."

Another pensioner, who lives in Hunts Pond Road, said: "Some motorists do come down here like a bat out of hell, I sit here and watch them. But the roundabouts are also treacherous because you don't really see them from a distance. After this accident I think the council should look at improving them."

A shopkeeper, who asked not to be named, said: "It's not really a problem during the day, but at night, drivers, the young ones in particular, race down this road and hit the roundabouts at quite a speed."

Firefighters from Fareham and Hightown responded to the accident which happened at around 5.45am on Saturday morning when a silver Ford Focus lost control and eventually came to a stop after smashing into a front porch.

It is thought the householders were not home at the time but returned to find that a large part of their porch had collapsed due to the impact.

Paramedics attended to the driver at the scene but he was not taken to hospital.
