A SCHOOL for children with special needs on the Waterside has been recognised for its outstanding arts teaching and curriculum.
Oak Lodge Special School in Dibden Purlieu has achieved an Artsmark's Silver award from the Arts Council England.
It was the sixth year in a row that the school which caters for 125 pupils of moderate learning difficulties had achieved this award.
Proud head teacher Bev Hawker said: "I am extremely thrilled that the Arts Council has recognised our arts education programme and I am extremely proud that we have achieved this prestigious award.
"The staff and pupils have worked very hard to ensure we were successful.
The school is currently funding the building £350,000 of a dance/drama studio, sculpture area and recording room.
Arts Council England chairman Sir Christopher Frayling said: "The arts are for everyone and an Artsmark recognises the significant achievement of schools which are committed to putting the transforming power of the arts at the heart of their curriculae and at the heart of their school community."
l The Arnewood School in Gore Road, New Milton, also achieved a Silver Artsmark award.
Arnewood headteacher Chris Hummerstone said: "Arts activity is thriving at Arnewood, with music, dance, drama, art, media studies and photography all enjoyed by our students.
"I congratulate all staff and members of the local community for all their hard work in achieving this award."
