THERE was ecstasy, there was agony and there was glamour.

Football turned fashionable for the evening at Southampton's Dock Gate 4 where the glitzy and the gorgeous gathered for England's clash with Sweden.

Despite the fact that England had failed to beat the Swedes since 1968, there was no shortage of optimism at the trendy Oxford Street bar, which adopted a Footballers' Wives theme for the night.

The gentlemen wore shirts and ties while the ladies dazzled in floor-length and fabulous gowns which could have come straight out of the pages of a fashion magazine.

During the build-up to the match the ladies were treated to a demonstration of the latest in facial technology and guests were encouraged to enter a charity raffle or purchase special England-themed jewellery to raise cash for cancer charity Tenovus.

A charity spokesman explained: "We are trying to promote our Check Your Tackle campaign and encourage men to be aware of testicular cancer."

Once the match began, however, it was all about England.

During half-time guests entered a silent auction, bidding for goodies including an England shirt signed by ex-Southampton player Theo Walcott.

Despite the 2-2 draw, everyone at Dock Gate 4 remained upbeat, with all convinced England can overcome this minor setback and bring the World Cup home.
