A £5m makeover for the Asda store at Chandler's Ford is set to get off the ground.

The Bournemouth Road store will close on Sunday, August 13 and reopen as a Supercentre on Monday, November 6 after a firework display on November 5.

It was 32 years ago that the store then flying the Carrefour banner opened to herald a new generation of hypermarkets which created fierce competition for the traditional high street trade.

While Asda is given its new look there will be temporary store in the grounds. It will provide a full range of food as well as a pharmacy and optical department.

The temporary store will be open from 8am to 10pm on Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 4pm on Sunday. Petrol will still be flowing from the store's filling station pumps. The home shopping service will still be available and will operate out of Asda's Southampton store.

The majority of the 900 staff at the Chandler's Ford site will work in the temporary store and the remainder will be relocated to surrounding stores during the makeover.

Others will be working with a number of local charities and organisations on a large scale community project.

General store manager Mike McMillan said: "At Asda we are continually improving our stores and what we offer our customers.

"Since we first moved into this building we have been confined to making the best use of the space available.

"But we are changing the space so we will have the ideal layout for our customers and colleagues to enjoy an even better shopping experience at Asda.

"It also allows us to make some fundamental improvements that will benefit our customers and our own people."

The Chandler's Ford's makeover will include a new customer and staff restaurant, an extended general merchandise and clothing area, a new foyer and kiosk, new lighting and air conditioning.

Mike added: "We are really excited about the refurbishment. What is more we can use the closure to address issues with building such as removing asbestos that you often find in buildings of this age."
