A SOLDIER serving with the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment has been flown back to the UK after being shot in the face.
The man, who was based with 1PWRR in Shaibah Logistics Corps in the desert south of Basra, has been flown back by British medics.
The unit, which recruits across Hampshire and the south-east coast, has been deployed in Iraq for two months.
The troops had moved out of their base and were staying in Al Amarah when their camp was attacked by rockets. Troops were deployed out of camp Abu Naji to search the area and hunt for any illegal weapons or insurgents, an MoD spokeswoman confirmed last night.
MoD media officers based in Iraq confirmed the incident in a phone call with the Daily Echo.
They said the soldier was initially taken to the British Military Hospital south west of Basra. A second soldier was also hurt but his injuries are not thought to be serious.
Medics flew out to see the injured man and later transported him back to Britain where he is now receiving further treatment.
He is not being named and the hospital will not be identified, the MoD said.
The spokeswoman added: "The soldier was taken to the British Military Hospital about 6km south west of Basra. Medics have since flown him back to Britain where he is receiving top medical treatment."
