These video stills show the dramatic moment when a walker was winched out of a bog in the New Forest after he became trapped.

The 46-year-old was airlifted out of the boggy marshland by helicopter after he got stuck in the bog.

Passers-by raised the alarm after hearing the man's cries for help yesterday afternoon.

Police and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were first on the scene but were unable to pull out the man, who was from Southampton.

A police spokesman said: "We were alerted by a witness telling us that he could hear a man shouting for help. Basically, the endeavours of the man to free himself meant he was sinking in the bog further."

Solent Coastguard was called to help with the rescue effort at Shatterford, near Beaulieu Station, Beaulieu Road, Beaulieu.

The Lymington rescue team was called in at 3.20pm and the coastguard helicopter was scrambled, having just dealt with an emergency in Southampton.

The team was able to drop a winch to the man who put it around himself and he was gently airlifted out of the bog and then handed over to waiting paramedics.

After a check-up the man was found to be fit and well and was allowed to return home.

The man told emergency teams he got into difficulties after trying to cross the marshland by jumping between clumps of grass.

Mike Greiner, Solent coastguard watch manager, said: "This is a fine example of multi-agencies working together with a winning outcome."

The Forestry Commission car park at Shatterford leads across open heath land carpeted with low level scrub towards Brockenhurst where it becomes shaded open woodland after a mile and a half.

There was little sign of activity in the area this morning although Dominic Whelan, the landlord at the nearby Beaulieu Road Inn, said he was unaware of the drama that unfolded yesterday afternoon.

He said: "Most of it is boggy land down here you would be quite surprised how the Forest holds its water."

AN injured windsurfer was airlifted to hospital yesterday after collapsing on his board.

He is thought to have hurt his head while sailing in rough conditions off Tanners Lane, Lymington.

A coastguard search and rescue helicopter flew him to Southampton General Hospital.
