LAWRIE McMenemy was bowled over by plans made by a leading cricketing charity when he paid a visit to the Hampshire Rose Bowl.

As president of the county's branch of the Lord's Taverners, he was delighted to reveal how people in Hampshire will benefit from their latest windfall.

The charity has been raising money to give young people, particularly those with special needs, access to sport since 1950.

Lawrie, who is also vice-president of Hampshire County Cricket Club, announced how Liverpool Victoria will be lending even more support to the charity.

For a number of years, the firm has donated £6 for every six scored in the County Championships which added up to more than £6,000 last season.

The scheme is now being expanded, with Liverpool Victoria pledging to donate an additional £10 per run for the season's highest individual score by a batsman.

The firm expects it will be able to donate £10,000 a year to cricket's favourite charity over the next four years, as a result of the generous gesture.

As a thank you, the Lord's Taverners has decided to donate two Liverpool Victoria branded mini-buses to special needs organisations.

One of the vehicles will be given to a Hampshire-based group, yet to be decided, to make a huge difference to their work.
