HOVERCRAFT maker Griffon Hoverwork has bought one of its Hampshire suppliers for an undisclosed sum.

Marchwood based Griffon snapped up Hovercraft Consultants Limited (HCL), a hovercraft skirt specialist based in Totton.

Set up in 1991, HCL specialises in the design and provision of air cushion technology and has built an international reputation with clients including the Swedish and Canadian Coastguards, Singapore and Auckland airports, as well as oil giant ExxonMobil.

A statement said HCL founder Malcolm Cox would now “play an important role in the development of Griffon Hoverwork’s consultancy service” and that the company would “continue to operate at Totton until further notice”.

Griffon managing director Adrian Went said: “HCL have been a key partner of both Griffon Hovercraft and Hoverwork in the past and Griffon Hoverwork in more recent history. Fully integrating their manufacturing capability and the essential hovercraft design knowledge that Malcolm brings into Griffon Hoverwork will be a further enabler to our planned growth.”

Griffon employs up to 200 people at Marchwood and on the Isle of Wight and exports worldwide to a range of clients including the military, pictured, recently sealing a £4m deal to supply specially designed amphibious equipment to the Royal Marines. The firm has also made craft for the Swedish navy.
