SOUTHAMPTON Solent University has welcomed its first chancellor, former Sea Lord Sir Alan West.
At a special ceremony held at the city's Guildhall, Sir Alan, pictured right, was installed in the ceremonial role while honorary degrees were presented to notable city residents including former Mayor of Southampton Councillor Edwina Cooke.
Leader of Hampshire County Council Ken Thornber, ITV chief executive Charles Allen and Professor Bill Wakeham, vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton, were also presented with honorary degrees on the day.
As chancellor of the university, Sir Alan will be one of its most prominent ambassadors. He will confer degrees at graduation ceremonies and represent the university at home and abroad.
He said: "It is a great honour to become chancellor of Southampton Solent University.
"I admire the vision and values espoused by the university and have been most impressed by what I have learned of their achievements so far.
"I strongly approve of the fact that admissions are highly diverse and inclusive."
