THIS group of seafaring youngsters from the New Forest were in danger of being sunk by new legislation.
The 9th Lymington Sea Scouts was faced with having to cancel many of its outdoor activities because updated safety laws prevent groups carrying equipment in the back of vehicles.
Now it has been kept afloat by a £1,000 grant from Esso and ExxonMobil, the companies that run Fawley refinery. The money has been used to buy the pictured trailer, which will enable the Scouts to transport items such as tents, cooking devices and luggage.
Esso and ExxonMobil employees who get involved with schools, charities and non-profit-making organisations in the local community can apply for grants from the company.
Mike Torrens, a measurement engineer at Fawley, received the grant on behalf of the Scout group.
He said: "Sea Scouts is about having fun and the chance to learn, sailing, kayaking and powerboating as well as traditional skills.
"It also enables youngsters to develop their teamwork and social skills.
"The organisation gives them the chance to have a go at a wide range of new activities that wouldn't otherwise be available to them."
The Cub leader at the group is Anne Pike, whose husband Ian is an instrument technician at Esso.
She said: "The leaders as well as the youngsters get a great deal out of Scouting, but like many groups were are desperately short of leaders."
