A TOUCH of class was brought through the airwaves when some of Southampton's most talented Indian musicians played live on the city's Asian and Ethnic radio station.

Sitar maestro Ajmal Mughal, pictured, was joined by tabla players Ragi Surjit Singh Hassanpuri and Iqbal for Unity 101 community radio's regular Sur Sangeet classical music programme on Sunday evening.

The city's only Asian and Ethnic community radio station plays a wide range of diverse music from South Asian to Polish and Chinese to Somalian and the new Sur Sangeet slot hopes to reach audiences from all backgrounds with all musical tastes.

Ram Kalyan Kelly, station manager at Unity 101, said: "This is a must programme for purveyors of classical music lovers.

"Unity 101 community radio keeps going to great lengths to bring all sorts of genres of music for the local community to share and enjoy. One of the key wishes of Unity 101 was to air local talent through live performances or CDs and now we have launched the Sur Sangeet show with a live performance."

All three musicians, who are Southampton based, have wowed the crowds at various concerts both locally and nationally and have performed with a number of renowned artists such as Ustad Latafat Ali Khan and (Sarangi Nawaz) Ustad Alla Rakha Khan.
