A HAMPSHIRE head teacher is swapping one successful secondary school for another next September.
Julie Turvey, head of The Westgate School, Winchester, since 2007, is leaving to take up a new post as head of Hounsdown School in Totton.
Both schools have made it on to an elite list of schools judged “outstanding”
by Ofsted inspectors and have GCSE results above the county and national average. But Hounsdown School in Jacob’s Gutter Lane has foundation trust status which gives it greater powers to manage its own affairs, free of Hampshire County Council control, for example over admissions.
In a letter to parents, Mrs Turvey said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at The Westgate and will miss the school, students and staff but the opportunity to be closer to my home and be involved in other opportunities offered were the factors in my decision to leave. ”
Deputy head teacher Paul Nicholson will be acting head for the two terms after September. Mrs Turvey will replace Di Nightingale as head teacher of Hounsdown.
