Police and ambulance crews were rushed off their feet dealing with drunken violence which erupted immediately after England crashed out the World Cup.

Police dealt with more than 100 reports of disorderly behaviour in the two hours following the penalty shoot-out defeat last night.

During the night police said they were inundated with calls relating to public disorder.

Officers were called to deal with 305 incidents on the night shift (7pm to 7am), up 70 per cent on the pervious week.

Duty Sgt Andrew McKinney: "There was no particular major incident but it was very busy."

"It was a nice sunny day, England were playing, beers were flowing and it seems some fits were flying as well."

Sgt McKinney said he had no information on the total number of arrests.

An ambulance spokesperson said: "During the game it was very quite. Immediately after the game was over it kicked off big time with a lot of drunken related incidents.

"Most of them seemed to be assaults and falls."

The spokesman said there were 300 calls from the end of the game to 10pm.

During the day there were 660 calls. The average for a Saturday is about 400.
