A FAIR Oak-based tree surgeon has been convicted of illegally felling a protected tree.
Edward Lavington, of E J Lavington Tree Surgeons, admitted chopping down a sweet chestnut tree in a garden in Marvin Way, Bitterne, Southampton.
The tree was covered by a preservation order requiring planning permission for any works. Mr Lavington pleaded guilty to carrying out the works without permission and was fined £200 with £100 costs.
A council spokesman said it considers the illegal felling of protected trees to be a “very serious offence” and in most cases will prosecute.
• To check whether or not a tree is protected, the council tree team can be contacted on 0800 519 1919 or by email at trees@southampton.co.uk.
