AS discussions were launched over the introduction of an elected mayor for Southampton, the city’s new ceremonial first citizen took on her role.
The chains of office were passed from outgoing mayor Liz Mizon to newly installed Councillor Carol Cunio, pictured right, in yesterday’s ceremony at the Guildhall.
In accepting the responsibility to serve the Mayor of Southampton said she was “humbled and honoured” to represent her home town. Her daughter Ruth will be her escort. Cllr Terry Matthews was made Sheriff of Southampton.
Charities that will be supported by her role include Southampton Sunday Lunch Project, which she actually set up but then had to hand over due to the failing health of her husband. A fund to raise money to install a stained glass window at St Mary’s church in memory of the ‘ordinary’ victims who died when the Titanic sank was also chosen.
It was the sixth year that the City of Southampton Award was presented to dedicated members of the community and this year saw three recipients.
Musician and charity worker Bob Pearce was recognised along with Pamela De Grouchy for her work with Southampton Operatic Society.
John Read who has been a volunteer with the Southampton Sunday Lunch project for 20 years was also honoured.
