A DISABLED pensioner who was beaten up when he tried to stop a brawl outside a Southampton pub has died.
The 64-year-old died six months after the attack, during which he suffered a series of punches and was knocked unconscious.
Detectives were waiting for the results of a post-mortem to decide if the man’s death was triggered by the assault.
However last night results proved that he had in fact died as a result of passing out and banging his head last month and that this was not connected to the incident.
Police say the man was at the Mountbatten Pub in Lords Hill – where the assault had also taken place last December – when he fell to the floor.
He had remained unconscious since the fall on April 25 and was being treated at Southampton General Hospital before dying on Wednesday. Police last night confirmed his death was unrelated to the assault outside the same pub on December 4 last year.
As reported at the time, it was understood the man had gone outside the premises near to Sainsbury’s, where he was attending a party with his wife, for a cigarette.
He was thought to have intervened in trouble between a group of men but suffered the injuries and was taken to hospital where doctors found he had a fractured cheekbone and cuts and bruises.
On his discharge from hospital, the man – who asked not to be identified at the time – told the Daily Echo: “I was obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
