A man being sought by police in Hampshire died after plunging from a third floor window, police said today.
The 24-year-old was stopped by police on routine patrol yesterday at 11am in the Southsea area of Portsmouth.
A Hampshire police spokeswoman said the man ran off leaving his bicycle and personal possessions.
As police arrived at a property at Grove Road North a short time later, the man fell from the building onto a car park below.
Despite efforts by police and paramedics, he was pronounced dead on arrival at The Queen Alexandra Hospital.
The spokeswoman added that the Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed of the incident ''as a matter of course''.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place later and next of kin have been informed.
