THOUSANDS of revellers basked in blazing summer sunshine at Southampton's Garden Festival over the weekend.

The city's Common became a showcase for fragrance and colour as visitors crowded in to enjoy floral competitions, exhibitions from trade organisations and a music festival.

Saturday saw 10,000 pack into the Common creating a vibrant party atmosphere as England took on Portugal for a place in the World Cup semi finals.

And, in spite of the team's heartbreaking loss, there were plenty of reasons to be cheerful for families attending the colourful event.

The garden festival was brought in two years ago to replace the city's balloon festival which was scrapped due to declining numbers.

As well as the gardening displays, there were exhibitions of vintage vehicles, a scale model of a Spitfire and a dog display team.
