A HAMPSHIRE man who fell to his death from a third floor window while being sought by police was named today.

Jason Grant, of Fawcett Road, Southsea, had been stopped by police on routine patrol at 11am yesterday in the Southsea area of Portsmouth.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said the 24-year-old ran off, leaving his bicycle and personal possessions.

As police arrived at a property in Grove Road North a short time later, he fell from the building on to a car park below.

Despite efforts by police and paramedics, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Queen Alexandra Hospital.

The spokeswoman added that the Independent Police Complaints Commission had been informed of the incident ''as a matter of course''.

Chief Superintendent David Peacock said: ''First and foremost I would like to send my condolences to Jason's family, who I met with this morning.

''We appreciate that there are a lot of questions that will need to be answered and there will be an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic outcome.''

Police are still awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination.
