Southampton’s Palmerston Park is to be transformed into a hub of creative activity this summer with a new music, art and film festival set to take place.
On Saturday 5 June 2010, local artists will showcase their skills in the park and organisers hope the event will put Southampton’s vibrant culture firmly on the map.
The festival is being organised by local promoters, EjectorSeat and will begin at 2pm and run through until 10pm.
A special outdoor gallery is planned, where the park’s trees and street furniture will be used to exhibit paintings, sculpture and photography. Live illustration groups will also be working all over the park.
Bands from in and around the city will perform on the park’s bandstand, collaborating with choirs and orchestras and a drumming group. Confirmed so far to play are Thomas Tantrum, Haunted Stereo, Waking Aida, Woven Bird, The Death of Cinema Club, The Hola and The Paper Cinema.
Meanwhile, with the help of Hampshire community film making resource City Eye, a film tent will screen premières of local films and entries for their latest film competition.
An arts market is also planned for the festival and this will be filled with the best in local culture from fanzines to hand made crafts and with various free workshops ongoing throughout the day.
Mac Ince, co-founder of EjectorSeat, hopes that the event will be a celebration of local arts culture and that it will help to create an ongoing dialogue between artists in the area. He said: “There’s so much artistic activity in Southampton that is under the radar, we really want the public and other artists to take notice.”
Southampton’s active Art House Café will be selling vegan and vegetarian food & refreshments on the day for all to enjoy.
The festival is still looking for further talent to participate in the festival. Are you an artist, musician, photographer, illustrator or filmmaker in the local area?
