VILLAGE cricketers turned out in force to take part in a fundraiser in Hamble for the John Merricks Sailing Trust.
The charity cricket match, which raised more than £2,250, has become one of the popular curtain-raisers to Hamble Week.
The trust was set up in memory of Olympic silver medallist John Merricks, who died in a car accident while competing in the 1997 Melges 24 European Championships in Italy.
Without financial support from other people, the 1996 Olympic 470 silver medallist would never have been able to fulfil his ambitions and demonstrate his remarkable talent for sailing.
The John Merricks Sailing Trust helps other young sailors achieve their goals.
Hundreds of friends and families gathered for the all-day cricket festival sponsored by Cricket Telecom, Linden Homes and Indigo Press.
Teams from four pubs in the village The Bugle, King & Queen, The Victory and Ye Olde Whyte Harte competed for The Bugle/John Merricks Sailing Trust Challenge Cup.
Since 1997 the John Merricks Sailing Trust, a registered charity, has supported youth sailing by awarding more than 65 grants totalling more than £110,000.
Those benefiting from the grants include individuals, clubs and youth organisations.
