FIREARMS teams surrounded a house in Southampton early this morning after a row between two men with a gun.
Police were called after reports of a fight in the Polygon, where one of the men produced the firearm.
Officers say a second man then made off with the gun while the initial man was arrested by police as he made off through Wyndham Place.
Detectives called in the force firearms unit who then surrounded a house in Argyle Road in the city centre at around 3am as they attempted to arrest a second man.
No shots were fired but police say local residents would have been disturbed by shouting and large numbers of police in their neighbourhood.
Two men are today in police custody, having been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences, and are awaiting questioning.
Meanwhile police are stepping up patrols in the local area in a move to reassure residents that the incident is isolated and they should not be worried.
Search teams will today be scouring the house in Argyle Road for evidence, including the firearm which has not yet been recovered.
Witnesses are urged to speak with detectives at Bitterne CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
