THREE Saints fans have been banned from all football matches for three years after being involved in a mass brawl with Dutch supporters at an England game.

Darren Wharton, Richard Bridle, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, are not allowed within a mile of Southampton's St Mary's Stadium for four hours before or after any home game.

The trio were involved in a huge fight with rival supporters in the Dutch capital Amsterdam before England played a friendly match there last August.

Police filmed Wharton, 40, of Chiltern Green, Southampton, trying to pick up a bike to use as a weapon as he clashed with a mob of Holland fans.

The 17-year-old was seen throwing beer glasses and a chair during the fight two hours before kick-off.

Footage also showed Bridle, 22, of Brookwood Road, Southampton, who Southampton Magistrate's Court heard has been viewed by police as a "risk supporter" for several years, joining in the carnage which left terrified families fleeing the city centre bar in fear.

Anthony Conniford, the man who oversees police operations at all England's foreign football matches today described the disorder as "one of the worst incidences of violence that I have seen when I have travelled abroad with England for a number of years".

A district judge accepted the trouble was instigated by Dutch hooligans, but said all three had contributed to the disorder.

She handed each one a three-year football banning order preventing them from attending any British matches.

They also have to surrender their passports whenever England play abroad.
