THE man accused of killing Saints steward Paula Poolton admitted he gave police wrong information about his movements during the crucial hour after she disappeared, a court heard.

Roger Kearney told Winchester Crown Court that his story about what he did that night in October 2008 had changed. The Royal Mail worker, pictured far right, revealed he had “made mistakes” in his version of events when first interviewed by police, getting things he did at work and what time he left home in the “wrong order”.

Prosecutor Nicholas Haggan QC suggested Kearney changed his story because he realised the police had more evidence against him than he thought, “time-shifting” his movements to fit the known facts.

Kearney said: “I believe that any of the jury, if they were asked to identify exactly what they did ten days ago, at what times, they would not be able to pinpoint every detail. I got the details of what I did in what order wrong.”

Kearney says he left his house at 10.20pm, not 9.30pm as the prosecution says, and the car seen on CCTV seven seconds later driving past Swanwick Marina one mile away was him taking his route to work. But the prosecution says that is impossible.

Kearney, 57, of Painswick Close, Sarisbury Green, denies killing his lover of three months Paula, pictured right, who was found stabbed to death in the boot of her car in Duncan Road, Park Gate.
