A HUNT has been launched for arsonists who brought terror to a Hampshire street.
One family, including two children, fled from their burning house in their pyjamas after flames spread from a caravan.
Residents said it was lucky no one was killed in the blaze, which is today at the centre of a police investigation.
As reported yesterday, the fire destroyed a caravan before spreading to the house, causing extensive damage to the roof, in New Road, Blackfield.
Three cars were also damaged.
Hearing a crackling sound at the side of the house, the family looked out to see the blaze. They rushed the children outside as the house caught alight.
Neighbour Lynne Grant, who has lived in the street for 27 years, condemned the suspected arsonists, saying: “They put lives at stake.
“Even if they didn’t know there were children in the house, they must have realised someone was living in there.”
Lynne, 62, said neighbours would form a group to tackle antisocial behaviour in the area.
She added: “We’re fed up with the problems around here. This is absolutely the pits, we’re sick of it.”
Police issued leaflets appealing for witnesses during door to door inquiries yesterday. Sniffer dogs were also sent into the property in a hunt for clues.
It is thought the arsonists set fire to two bin bags next to the caravan and the flames spread.
DC Simon Walters, from Lyndhurst CID, said: “There was clear potential for tragedy in this incident. Quick actions upon discovery of the fire may have saved the children’s lives.”
Crews from across the region tackled the blaze which broke out at 11pm on Wednesday night.
Anyone who may have information about the blaze is asked to contact DC Craig Fielding at Lyndhurst CID on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
