Race for Life is fast approaching and women across Hampshire are busy preparing themselves to be fit and ready for the big events in Southampton and Winchester. For some, training is already well underway – and running or jogging the 5km will be an absolute breeze.
But putting off training is easily done – so if you are one of the many wondering whether you’ll make it around the course, don’t panic. Now is the time to start readying yourself for a fun day of exercise and determination with the help of Fitness First Southampton.
Personal trainer Natalie Bee is offering some practical hints and training tips designed to make sure race day is a successful one for all involved.
“This is a fantastic chance for local women to get themselves in shape and raise money for charity at the same time,” she said.
“There is no need to go overboard. Absolute beginners still have time to follow a sensible training programme that is well within their capabilities.
“And, for those who are already well underway with their preparations, it could be time to up the pace a little. Just follow my tips and go for it – you’ll have the race of your life.”
Fitness First training tips n Wear appropriate clothing including a sports bra and proper running shoes.
n Remember your rest days as they are vital for recovery and help to avoid excessive tiredness.
n Relax your hands and keep them at your waist; believe it or not if you bring them up higher you will become tired much faster n Keep your posture straight; if you start to slouch just stick out your chest n Try to find a training buddy – running with a friend is great motivation to keep you both going.
n Sip water while running if necessary and make sure you drink plenty before and after exercising to keep yourself well hydrated.
n Listen to your body and do what it tells you; use the routine as a guide only and if you have any pain stop exercising and seek professional advice.akie Bee
