Mary Bates (left), widow of Southampton legend Ted, has died aged 88.
THE widow of Saints legend Ted Bates, has died.
Mary Bates passed away on May 25, aged 88 years.
Born Mary Smith, in Shirley, she met her husband not long after he moved to Saints.
The couple later married in 1940 at St. James' Church.
During Ted's time as a player, Mary worked at The Dell as the secretary's assistant and as PA announcer, before leaving in 1958 to start a family.
Her funeral will be held at the East Chapel of Southampton Crematorium at 11am on June 10, 2010.
The family requests that rather than flowers, well wishers make donations by cheque, to the One Community Hillside Day Care Centre, via Nigel Guilder Funeral Directors in Chandler's Ford.
