HUNDREDS of residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease are set to benefit after a government U-turn over the availability of drugs.
Government agency NICE has recommended Alzheimer’s medicine should be available to people in the early stages of the disease, overturning its decision in 2007 to limit the drugs to those suffering from the most serious symptoms.
Sian Evans, external affairs manager at Hampshire Alzheimer’s Society said: “This decision is a victory for the thousands who have campaigned.”
While there is no cure for the disease, medical trials have shown these drugs affect about 50 per cent of Alzheimer’s sufferers and can make symptoms more manageable for three to four years.
