SAINTS star Jose Fonte has been fined and had points put on his driving licence for letting his dad drive his car without insurance.

The 26-year-old central defender, who scored Saints' first goal on Saturday, pleaded guilty to permitting the use of a motor vehicle with no insurance when the case came before Southampton magistrates.

Artur Fonte, who was also a professional footballer, was caught driving his son’s 56- registration Range Rover on the A33 in Southampton on May 11.

Fonte, who was not in court, was fined £1,500 and given six points on his driving licence. He was ordered to pay £35 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

He has to pay by November 8.

Fonte, who lives in Southampton, joined Saints in January from Crystal Palace for a £1.2m fee, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw at Millwall last season and scored his first Saints goal in the 4-0 win at Bristol Rovers in August, the final match before Alan Pardew was sacked as manager.

Fonte, whose squad number is six, was previously on the books of Portuguese giants Benfica. His brother Rui Fonte is a former Arsenal striker while his father played in the Portuguese first division for FC Penafiel.
