A HAMPSHIRE motorcyclist who was caught doing double the speed limit has been banned from the roads.

Samuel Stokes, from Fareham, was captured on camera racing to work at more than 60mph in a 30mph zone on his red and blue Honda CBR 600c earlier this year.

The 21-year-old, of Park Lane, pleaded guilty at Fareham Magistrates’ Court to two counts of excessive speeding along London Road and Copnor Road in Portsmouth.

The court heard he was first caught on the fixed camera doing 61mph, at 8.48am, on July 19, in the 30mph zone and then again, at the same time on September 6, doing 54mph.

As he had no front number plate police were unable to identify the driver, but having noticed a pattern in his movements, they were able to lie in wait and stop him as he travelled the same route on September 13.

In court Stokes, who was defending himself, said: “I have no excuse. I was just getting to work.”

He was given a six-month driving ban and ordered to pay a total fine of £250.

PC Mick Gear, Bikesafe co-ordinator for the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “Speed limits are there for a reason and driving at the speed limit can be the difference between injuring and killing a pedestrian if you hit them or dying or surviving a crash if you come off your bike.

“It may not feel like a big deal at the time but the fallout from speeding can be catastrophic.

“It’s through prosecutions like this we hope others will be dissuaded from breaking the law.”
