A CORONER has rejected neglect claims surrounding the death of an elderly Hampshire patient.
Southampton coroner Keith Wiseman recorded a verdict of death by natural causes after an inquest into the death of Hilda Andrews, pictured with her husband John, at Romsey Hospital.
Mrs Andrew’s son, Michael Curtis, accused the hospital of sub-standard care.
The 88-year-old, of The Harrage, Romsey, was admitted to the hospital after a breaking a bone in a fall.
A month later, in March 28, she died from perforated gastric ulcers.
Mr Curtis claims her symptoms were not spotted in time.
But Mr Wiseman said: “In broad terms I have to say I did not receive evidence supporting many of Mr Curtis’ concerns.”
But Mr Wiseman critised the loss of medical notes.
After the verdict Mr Curtis said he accepted the outcome.
But the 54-year-old from Luton said: “We feel there are still matters to be pursued.”
The sudden death had “a dramatic effect” on his family – within a matter of months his step-dad, John, died of “a broken heart”, he said.
Mr Curtis added: “There will always be a question of doubt in our minds as to whether earlier recognition of her changing condition and action by the staff at Romsey Hospital could have saved her.”
