An investigation has been launched after more than 60 firefighters tackled a blaze in Southampton city centre today.
Flats were evacuated during the incident at the Aleha Restaurant in Commercial Road as the fire threatened to explode.
The fire broke out at about 3am. A fire service spokesman said a gas leak ignited.
Flats above and next door to the restaurant, opposite the Mayflower Theatre were evacuated, police said.
Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang in the early hours.
Firefighters from St Mary’s, Hightown, Redbridge, Hamble,
target="_blank">Eastleigh, Botley and Romsey tackled the blaze.
Southern Gas Networks engineers were called out to cap the leak and make the area safe.
An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.
