OH COME all ye faithful – to help break a world record.
The biggest Christmas carol concert ever held is being planned for Southampton this winter.
Organisers hope to cram 32,000 people into St Mary’s Stadium for the special event, which if successful would smash the current record for the number of people singing carols in one place.
Eighties pop star Yazz has already been signed up to perform a solo at the Southampton Sings concert on December 17.
The special carol service is being organised by the people behind Southampton Passion 2011, a major religious festival which will next year see the last days of Christ recreated.
Huge crowds Thousands of people are expected to descend on Hoglands Park for that event, which forms part of Good Friday celebrations next Easter and follows on from a similar festival held in Winchester three years ago.
Organisers hope Southampton Sings will be a major step on the fundraising ladder for the Passion event, and help put the city on the map.
Tickets are being sold through Saints’ ticket system to allow records to be kept in a bid to validate the world record attempt.
Junior schools across the city are being encouraged to get involved through an illustrated writing competition in which kids have the chance to explain what Christmas means to them.
The best work will be in the programme for the service, and the winners will get to walk out onto the pitch during the event.
Tickets go on sale from tomorrow. They cost £4 per person or £12 for a family consisting of two adults and two children, or one adult and three children. To buy tickets call 0845 688 9288.
