A veterinary nurse from Hampshire has completed a gruelling trek to help wild bears held captive in Romania.

Sue Pell, 43, from Satchell Lane, Hamble, walked 50 miles over the tough terrain of the Carpathian Mountains in Eastern Europe to raise money for the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

The charity runs a sanctuary in the country for bears that have been taken from the wild as cubs and made to “dance” as a tourist attraction.

The practice is now illegal in Romania, but the charity is working to rescue the 30 animals still thought to be in captivity.

Sponsorship for Sue’s trek can be made through justgiving.com/romaniabears.
