HE’S famous for wearing a bloodied bandage around his head, but yesterday former England football legend donned a cap and gown as he picked up an honorary degree from Southampton Solent University.

Days after celebrating becoming the first manager of a Scottish Premier League side not to lose to Rangers this season, Terry Butcher, the current Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss travelled south to receive a doctor of sport.

He joined the first of more than 2,000 students graduating from Solent University this week in ten ceremonies being held at Southampton Guildhall.

Terry, who played for England 77 times during his career as a no-nonsense defender, was given his award as a regular guest lecturer on Solent’s applied sport science courses.

Also picking up an honorary degree yesterday was record-breaking disabled Hampshire sailor Geoff Holt. It is the second time yachtsman Geoff, who became the first quadriplegic to sail single-handedly around Great Britain and across the Atlantic, has received an award from the institution, having previously graduated in fine arts valuation.

Monumental typographer Richard Kindersley who has worked on the British 9/11 Memorial in London also received an honorary degree from Solent University where he is a visiting fellow.
