Investigations are underway today into a blaze at a Hampshire tyre centre.

Firefighters were called to Autotech Tyres in William Street, Northam, Southampton, at around 8.30pm last night, after reports of a blaze in the prefabricated garage.

Nearby Millbank Street, which runs behind the Northam estate, was closed off as a precaution while the blaze was dealt with, but there were no gas cylinders found inside and it is not thought there was any risk to the public, with the fire contained within the building.

A total of 23 firefighters and officers from St Mary's and Hightown stations were sent to the scene, as well as the Redbridge-based aerial ladder platform and special equipment unit from St Mary's.

They used breathing apparatus, jets and ventilation fans to tackle the fire in the single-storey building, which measures 60x30 metres and houses tyres and machinery, and had the blaze out by 10pm.

It is not thought the centre has been badly damaged, but specialist investigators are due to return to the scene tomorrow in a bid to discover what caused it.

No one was inside the garage at the time of the fire.
