ANGRY mums-to-be are today begging for the boss of a Southampton baby shop to tell them why the store remains closed.
Their plea for information comes after their phone calls and emails to Little Angels Prams in Shirley Precinct, in a desperate attempt to get prams they have ordered and paid for in full, remain unanswered for the eighth day.
Suppliers have also struggled to get through to the shop, which has sold prams and other baby equipment in the city for 19 years and is managed by Don Jenkings.
Now Trading Standards bosses have issued advice for worried pregnant mums but reveal people who have paid cash would probably lose their money if the company does go into administration.
As reported in yesterday’s Daily Echo, the shop mysteriously closed its shutters last Thursday and a note on the shutters read: “Closing early today, Thursday 1pm, sorry.”
Scores of mums yesterday contacted the Daily Echo fearing they have lost hundreds of pounds and now have no way of transporting their newborns from hospital.
Rachal Willett, 31, of Upper Shirley, paid £320 in full for a pram in September and was told that the shop would place the order on October 1.
But now the first-time mum has contacted the supplier Obaby who told her they too have not been able to contact the supplier and the shop had tried to place the order for her pram but was unable to.
Rachal, said: “I am so disappointed with the situation especially because I am supposed to have my baby next week and I currently have no means of transportation for my baby when he or she is born. We were going to get the pram on Ebay but wanted to shop local.”
Michael Oxford, 24, of Upper Shirley, whose baby is due on Christmas Eve, got an answer phone message at 12pm last Thursday – just one hour before the owner closed – to say his baby’s £307 paid-for pram had arrived. He said: “There was no indication that they were struggling. Even if it was a sudden death in the family, someone should let us know what’s going on. No reply and the website down does leave a very sour taste in the mouth.”
Another mum-of-one Kirsty Glendinning, 20, of Millbrook, who is due to give birth in December, has been saving every month and paying the shop in cash as part of their payment plan. She said: “I don’t know what to do. I can’t believe it. I feel completely gutted.”
The Daily Echo yesterday received no reply from the family-owned shop, which is not listed with Companies House.
