ELDERLY sisters managed to fight off a would-be robber after he attacked them in a Hampshire town.

One of the women has been described by police as 'fiesty' after she was able to fend the attacker off by swinging her shopping bag at him.

He approached the pair, aged 76 and 83, by riding up to them on a bike and demanded they hand over their handbags.

The younger sister swung her shopping bag at the man and he rode off towards Albany Road.

The offender is described as a white man in his early 20s, about 5ft 6 tall and of medium build.

He was clean shaven and was wearing a dark tracksuit with white stripes down the sleeves, white trainers and a dark woolly hat. He was riding a black bike.

The incident happened on The Thicket, just off Elm Grove, in Southsea around 4.15pm on Friday afternoon.

DC Fiona Wright from Portsmouth CID said: “The sisters had been enjoying a cup of tea earlier in the local shopping precinct and were walking home.

“This cowardly would-be thief certainly wasn’t expecting the feisty younger sister to swing her shopping bag at him and he was clearly so shocked he rode off empty handed.

“He’d been cycling around in Grove Road South prior to the incident and I urge anyone who may have seen him to come forward.

“Thankfully neither of the ladies were hurt.”
